Sunningdale, the development Garden Cities started 12 years ago has proved one of the most successful examples of community building in the Western Cape. The homes have been purpose designed and quality built for easy family living. The planning allows for the maximum living space, and the positioning of the houses lends a high degree of privacy.
As with all Garden Cities’ developments, Sunningdale is not all about providing houses – the community’s activities are well catered for with halls, schools, sports facilities and an abundance of open space that lends a bright, warm atmosphere to the suburb.
Recently, City Council approval has been given for the development the 25-hectare Phase 9 of Sunningdale, and the R40 million services contract is underway.
The new building programme will respond to a pent-up demand for homes in the area, following an eight-month development hiatus as a result of a lack of municipal services for the land.
The latest development phase takes place off Tryall Road, a new access to the suburb from the West Coast Road, where over the next five to six years, a further 1100 new homes will be built in stages.
The approval for the extension of the 12-year-old development where so far 3000 houses have been built and accommodates more than 9000 people.
The new development at Sunningdale includes single residential houses of 110 to 160 square metres on plots of 550 to 750 square metres and a group housing project providing 160 affordable homes along the lines of previous models which have proved successful in the suburb. The group houses will have between 60 and 89 square metres of floor area plus garage, on manageable plots along a wetland canal.
